PPA Rally in Washington State
Former Senator Alfonse D’Amato, chairman of the Poker Players Alliance (PPA), the leading poker grassroots advocacy group with more than one million members nationwide and 20,000 in Washington, today released the following statement at the conclusion of oral arguments presented before the State Supreme Court in the case of Rousso v. State. Mr. Rousso believes the state law making individuals felons for playing poker online is unconstitutional.
“I was amazed by the turnout of poker players who joined us this morning on the steps of the
Supreme Court to support Mr. Rousso’s case. These Washington poker enthusiasts are doctors,
lawyers, auto mechanics and school teachers, not hardened felons. The Poker Players Alliance is
grateful that the local poker community is so dedicated, and I hope local lawmakers know that
these voters care deeply about their freedoms.”

Video of John Pappas, Executive Director of the PPA Speaks about the UIGEA June 1st Deadline.
U.S. House Ways and Means Committee Hearing
On May 19th, John Pappas, Executive Director of the Poker Players Alliance (PPA), released the a statement on the House Ways and Means Committee hearing on HR 4976, the Internet Gambling Regulation and Tax Enforcement Act of 2010.
“This hearing underscores the increasing Congressional interest in a licensed and regulated online gaming environment. While the robust consumer protections provided by regulation are the biggest selling point, in the current economic environment, additional tax revenue derived from a licensed industry is certainly appealing as well.”

Florida
On Thursday, May 20, 2010, Florida State Director Martin Shapiro participated in a panel discussion with the Florida Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering (DPMW) on new rulemaking in accordance with poker industry standards in land-based cardrooms. DPMW is currently re-evaluating its rulemaking process and developing new regulations in regards to the recently passed legislative bill which will enact statutes to remove all limits from the poker games and increase the operating hours at Florida cardrooms. These changes will go into effect on July 1st of this year.
South Carolina
The PPA worked closely with our allies in the state House of Representatives to pass H.4267, a bill which would make social gambling and raffles legal in South Carolina. H.4267 passed out of subcommittee after compelling testimony from John Pappas, Executive Director of the PPA, and other PPA supporters of the bill.
H.4267 was sent to the full House Ways and Means Committee, but due to the limited time left in the legislative session and the legislature’s need to focus on the budget, the House decided to table the bill until next legislative session.
