Horton’s Kids was founded in 1989 by then-Congressional staffer Karin Walser who met a group of children at a Capitol Hill gas station and decided to take action. Since then, hundreds of Congressional staff people and other D.C. professionals have served as volunteer tutors and mentors. In its twentieth year, Horton’s Kids serves 157 children and families within Ward 8. The organization is widely embraced and respected by parents, social service agencies, and the community at-large. In addition to tutoring with Congressional staff in the Rayburn House Office Building on Mondays and Tuesdays, Horton’s Kids are tutored by Department of Education staff at their headquarters on Wednesdays. Older youth participate in a special tutoring and enrichment program on Wednesday evenings. Every week, children go on recreational field trips and many are involved in additional enrichment activities through Horton’s Kids. Horton’s Kids is like a second family to some of the neediest children in Anacostia. In addition to creating individualized learning plans sensitive to the unique academic, emotional, and physiological needs of each child, our comprehensive approach tackles a long list of issues that get in the way of child development. In response to the children’s many needs, our services have expanded to include: q Nutritious meals and snacks q Family strengthening programs q Dental and medical care q Emergency clothing and shoes q College application assistance q Summer camp q Birthday and holiday celebrations q Eye exams and glasses Horton’s Kids’ comprehensive program works. Even though our children live in the most dangerous part of Washington and attend some of its worst performing schools, they are making impressive gains. Seventy-six percent of children tested improved their reading fluency over the last year and fifty-nine percent improved their math skills! In the coming years, we predict that our expanding services will result in even more impressive academic accomplishments by this group of children living in the shadow of the United States Capitol.
