excerpt:
Despite allegations that its top brass had ties to the local poker scene, the district attorney’s office in Pueblo will not be disqualified from prosecuting a handful of defendants accused of participating in illegal card games.
District Attorney Bill Thiebaut and his second in command, Assistant District Attorney Cecil Turner, both testified Thursday in the court of Pueblo County Judge Ernest Ruybalid. Lawyers for a half-dozen defendants facing petty-offense illegal gambling charges sought their removal.
The defendants received tickets in two separate poker raids. The first was executed in February 2007 at Big Daddy’s Aces Club, 1300 U.S. 50 Bypass. The case against its accused proprietor, Ben Gradishar, is pending in county court. Gradishar was not among the defendants who presented motions on Thursday. At that game, 47 people were cited.
