Actions recognize Commonwealth’s jurisdiction in matter

FRANKFORT, KY – Internet gambling sites have begun blocking access to Kentucky users in recognition of the Commonwealth’s jurisdiction to protect its citizens from unregulated, illegal activity within its borders. The Commonwealth continues to negotiate with those sites toward a resolution of the dispute.

The action follows a court order issued last week to registrars of 141 domain names that operate as unlicensed, unregulated internet gambling sites, compelling them to transfer the site names to control of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The Justice and Public Safety Cabinet filed suit on behalf of the Commonwealth seeking to force these sites to block access to Kentucky users, or relinquish control of their domains. A hearing to determine whether the sites must be forfeited to the Commonwealth is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. today in Franklin County Circuit Court.

In advance of the forfeiture hearing, operators of these sites have already begun blocking Kentucky users. For example, Goldencasino.com notified Kentucky account holders on Tuesday that the site will “no longer accept play from residents of Kentucky,” and that users’ accounts were being closed.

Registrars in the United States and foreign countries have complied with the court’s order and transferred the domain names to an account held by the Commonwealth.
