excerpt:
But the owners of the popular Greeley bar said the state officials were out of line with the raid.
“This was a poker club,” Miner said. “It wasn’t formed by our bar, it was a bunch of friends. The house didn’t take a cut of the money, we didn’t force anyone to buy drinks, and we made sure we met all the state requirements.”
According to one player who didn’t want her name used, the club was not connected to Rafferty’s, except as a place to play poker. She said money can be won or lost in the games, but the players also try to accumulate points so they can win trophies and ribbons. The woman also said a person has to be invited to join the club by a member, and there was usually a $20 buy-in to get started. That money went into a pot for the winners.
The club plays on Tuesday and Sunday nights, Miner said, and everyone who joins is required to read the bylaws, which qualify it as a club.

I’m sure we’ve all read about the raid in Greeley at Rafferty’s. This is a good example of what is wrong in Colorado. Our law enforcement resources are focused on things like this while drug dealers, gang bangers and child molesters roam our streets. Folks it is time to end this madness. Friends and associates getting together for a game of poker should be allowed whether in a bar or in the confines of someone’s home. Join with me and the other members of the PPA who want to take a stand. Call or write your state representative or senator and tell them that raids like this are wrong for so many reasons. Join the PPA in the fight to save poker in Colorado.
