June 9th, 2008

excerpt:

Imagine playing poker and not being able to hear what’s going on at the table. That’s the challenge for deaf players, but it doesn’t keep them away from the game they love, nor does it discourage them from pursuing opportunities to compete against the best players in the world.

The popularity of poker among the deaf was the catalyst for the formation of the National Deaf Poker Tour (NDPT) two years ago by a small group of deaf players who saw the need to create an organization that would give them recognition and open the door to compete on the world poker stage.

The organization has made great strides toward that goal by hosting four tournaments a year, two in Las Vegas and two in Atlantic City, but its efforts to hold a tournament in the heartland of the country had proved frustrating until the Majestic Star Casinos in Gary, Ind., stepped forward. The first Midwestern Regional Tournament of the NDPT will be begin at 9 a.m. Saturday in the Majestic Star poker room.
