I can't say that anyone will ever enforce it, but technically, it's a misdemeanor to win money playing cards in Michigan. Period.
Wow, didn't realize it had been this long since I was on the forums here.
I guess the question I was looking to ask is more along the lines of Charity Poker Laws in Michigan.
I see all these bowling alleys and bars hosting charity poker games every weekend with differant charitys license. This has made me start to gather info on possiable setting up a poker room of sorts either inside of a bowling alley or bar or maybe renting a spot for a stand alone.
I'm working on see what the legal aspects along with the deal on profits shared between the co. that runs the event and the charity that gets the license.
Any help help weather info given here or links to assist in my research would be appreciate.
Breeze, Sorry I never saw there was an updated post in this forum.
Starting a room seems to be pretty difficult right now, as apparently the state is not allowing any more suppliers - either that, or they are so backed up in applications, that they might never get through any more, I haven't really heard which way, except that I've heard that no one new has received the ability to become a legal game supplier for months now.
Take that with a grain of salt, though. My boss could be blowing smoke at me as far as that goes. I think he exaggerates things a bit much usually.
You might try contacting the Michigan Charity Gaming people (google "Michigan Charitable Gaming"), and see what that turns up exactly.
I know that the Michigan Charitable Gaming Division lets certain 501c Nonprofits up to 4 temporary gaming licenses that are good for 4 days each, and that is how it seems there are "permanent" legal charity poker rooms in some locations.
My boss seems pretty willing to help people get started in that area, as long as they aren't going to be in an area competing with him (Grand Rapids or Ann Arbor)
I wonder what the laws are in Michigan for players of online gambling? I ask because I want to start playing in heracasino.com on the recommendation of a friend and you survey the site and is safe but I want to know if you can play with credit cards compulsory and if this is criminal in the state of Michigan? Thank you!
The charitable gaming system in Michigan does not allow the gaming room to make any money off the game. The room can make money off the food and beverages sold to the players. It can also make money renting the equipment (tables, chairs, chips, cards, etc.) to the charity. None of those amounts can be tied to the profit made by the charity. (example the table rent cannot be 10% of the take) Also Michigan let the ban on online poker expire through the "sunset clause" in the law. You are not winning money with cards online. you are winning money with computer simulations. As long as you are not in violation of the "Wire Act" you are good to go. (No sports betting or horse race betting)
Speaking as a Colorado PPA member, I envy you having that much lee way. In Colorado you can't use a poker tournament to raise money for a charity unless the whole thing in totally "free" and you only "suggest" donations to the charity. Giving or not giving cannot be used to allow or disallow your play in the tournament and you can't "win" anything for playing. Pretty anachronistic for a Western state where poker got it's start huh? Oh for the good old days!
David,
The room owner typically makes up to 50% of the house take of the charity games.
