  1. I was one of the original Spade Club Beta Testers for Card Player Magazine's new online poker site. Unfortunately, when it went live I was no longer allowed to participate because my residence is in Maryland. Spade Club is a subscription based site so I don't really understand why there would be legal gaming issues. I'll try to find out who was responsible for the state by state decisions and keep you posted. It is a great way for people to learn poker with no real risk.

twilliams: I asked this question many times to the Spade Club. There are also several other subscriptions sites like the CLUB and WSOP that will not allow Maryland. It is my understanding that it is they way they interpret the MD "Sweepstakes" laws? I also sent an E-mail to I. Nelson Rose, Attorney who is the leading authority on Gambling laws and he responded back indicating that as well.

However, there is on subscription site Pure Poker that allows MD players and it is my understanding that Mr. Rose represents that company located in SF.

I posted on the "old" Site about the old MD laws and the many challenges that we face in MD. Unfortunately, oyur rep in MD (for the Poker Alliance) never responded and to my knowledge never read the post. What is he doing?

Yes, as I understand Spade Club is subject to state sweepstakes laws and in about a dozen states it does not comply. MD must be one of those states.

Hello, I think it is time poker players in Maryland bannded together. There is only one way to get counted in this state and that is going to take all registered voters/pokerplayers to petition lawmakers in the state of Maryland to change our gambling laws. We need to put together a group, willing to get real signatures on real paper, a sponsor in the house, and an attorney to help us. I have taken the time to read some of the gambling laws of Maryland and quite frankly most seem to favor the state financially. We are being held hostage while our state through out dated laws most of whitch should never have made law in the first place are going unchallenged. When a person, organazation,or government uses their position for financial gain,it is called extortion. Such is the case with the only gambling of chance permitted by Maryland, the Maryland state, and interstate lotterys. Organized crime seems to be alive and well it just moved to the state house. While its fair to say most of those in office now, probably had nothing to do with those laws making it to the books it is there responsibillity to do something about them.Govener Omally has found yet another way to extort more money from the people through ciggarete addiction. No I am not using this site as a place to sound off merely pointing out what happens when lawmakers are allowed to act unchecked. With advice from the PPA and a lot of Maryland people we could get something done. I say lets get started the PPA has shown us the way but its up to us to take the fight to the state law makers. By the way I like I'm sure many of you have, sent a letter to senator Hoyer, Mccaulsky, etc. Just to have them resite the law over and over again. I'm sick of it, its time they either do something about it or we vote their asses out.......Oscar

Just a short note. When I started playing poker online 3 1/2 years ago I approached a Maryland lawyer and asked if playing online from Maryland was legal. The response from the lawyer was 'as long as the poker site is located in a state, province, country that allows legal play, then it is not illegal in Maryland.' So what is the real truth in Maryland? Especially since this state is raping its citizens with LOTTO, KENO, etc.

  6. I agree. Every time I see one of the thousands of Maryland Lottery's "Let Yourself Play!" ads I just cringe. The level of hypocrisy is just staggering. Even if I get my money in drawing to a one out gut-shot, I'd still have a better chance of winning than I do buying a lottery ticket.
Actually, when I think about it. I'd have a better chance of having my parachute not open-landing in the water and being attacked by a shark-then being struck by lightening while fighting the shark, then I would to win the lottery.
Sadder still, is the amount of time, money and effort that goes into supporting the so-called horse racing industry here in Md. An industry that is completely ignored by the vast majority of the public with the exception of about 2 minutes a year.
