Weekly Update from Rich Muny, VP of Player Relations

I have great news for everyone. PPA had two excellent appearances on Capitol Hill last week!

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee held a hearing to examine the potential impact of Internet gaming regulation on Indian tribal interests on Thursday, November 17th. PPA Chairman former Sen. D’Amato testified for PPA, accompanied by PPA Executive Director John Pappas.

It is my opinion that our chairman stole the show, but do not take just my word for it, Please check out the hearing for yourself (click here to watch).

Recaps and more information on this important hearing:

The Friday U.S. House Subcommittee for Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade hearing was excellent for poker as well. Please click here for more on this hearing, and please check out PPA’s memo to the subcommittee (linked below) to read our response regarding bot detection technology, how sites handle Internet service disruptions, and discussion of other issues important to the poker community.

Recaps and more information on this important hearing:
These hearings are evidence of the outstanding work the poker community has done to ensure that our elected representatives hear from us. I again thank everyone for taking the steps necessary to ensure our lawmakers understand that we poker enthusiasts will not back down and will not simply go away!

Weekly Update from Rich Muny, VP of Player Relations

I have great news to share with everyone. There will be TWO hearings on the online poker issue this week!

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee is holding a hearing to examine the impact of Internet gaming regulation on Indian tribes on Thursday, November 17th at 2:15 PM ET. PPA Chairman former Sen. D’Amato will testify for PPA, to be accompanied by Executive Director John Pappas.

The Senate committee hearing is excellent news for the poker community, as this is not the type of hearing where the poker community would necessarily expect to be invited to provide testimony. The invitation was due both to Sen. D’Amato’s esteemed background and to the activism of all of us in the poker community. Getting a hearing scheduled prior to the Thanksgiving recess was an accomplishment as well. For more, please click here to read PPA’s statement on the issue of tribal online poker, and please click here for details on this important hearing.

Additionally, the U.S. House Subcommittee for Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade will hold another hearing on Internet gaming on Friday, November 18th at 9 AM ET. Please click here for more on this important hearing, and please click here to read PPA’s memo to the subcommittee regarding bot detection technology, how sites handle Internet service disruptions, and discussion of other issues important to the poker community.

These hearings are hard evidence of the great work the poker community has been doing to ensure lawmakers hear from us. I thank everyone for taking the steps necessary to ensure our elected representatives understand that we poker enthusiasts will not back down and will not simply go away!

Take Action

To ensure that your elected representatives know you demand your rights, please bookmark the daily action plan and check it out every day. I update it every morning with new actions we can take to stand up for the game. These take just a couple of minutes to complete. We have received excellent feedback from lawmakers and our lobbyists on the effectiveness of these actions.

This week’s actions will focus on this week’s hearings, so please be sure to join in and help poker earn two big wins:

Weekly Update from Rich Muny, VP of Player Relations

I always enjoy meeting with the poker community to discuss the issues on everyone’s mind. I think it is very important to meet with everyone, so I do it as often as I can. This week, I had the pleasure of going to the Breeders’ Cup Poker Tournament in greater Louisville (only an hour from my home) to meet with fellow poker players.

It was a great event. I was very happy to hear of the general enthusiasm for the fight for our rights. The community is genuinely enthused by the recent Congressional hearing on online poker/gaming issue and by the progress of HR 2366, the Online Poker Act.

I am proud that we are continuing to take this fight to our opponents. In the dark days of 2006, when the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act passed, the forward momentum we have now seemed hard to imagine. It is gratifying that, while we may remain underdogs, there is a feeling that we have some wind at our backs. I thank all of you for that.

So, let’s keep this up! Please take a moment today to send your elected representatives snail mail letters telling them we wish for them to support our right to play. It will take just a couple of minutes! Again, thank you all for taking the time to stand up for our right to play.
  1. CLICK HERE to go to PPA’s prewritten, editable letter.
  2. Choose “Printed Letter” as your delivery option, edit if you care to, and then click “send letter.”
  3. The option to open as an .RTF file will open the letters in your default word processing program.
  4. Simply print, sign, and send!
  5. Have your friends, family, spouse, significant other, and everyone else send their own letters as well.
Thank you for participating and for allowing me the honor of serving the community in this capacity!

Weekly Update from Rich Muny, VP of Player Relations

Thank you all for taking the time to stand up for our right to play. As you know, this paid off for us big time last week, as we were heard by the House Subcommittee for Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade. This hearing was a direct result of the advocacy of the poker community. You can watch the full 2½ hour committee hearing and read articles about the hearing here.

I was impressed with PPA Chairman D’Amato’s testimony. I was also impressed with the impassioned support of Congressman Joe Barton (R-TX), sponsor of HR 2366, the Online Poker Act. His strong pro-poker statements really demonstrated the impact of our efforts in educating Capitol Hill on the support the game of poker enjoys across the nation.

To help continue this momentum, will you please bookmark the Fight for Poker Rights daily action plan and participate in these actions? If we all take just a few minutes a day here, we will make a huge difference in this fight:

Fight for Poker Rights Daily Action Plan on Two Plus Two
Fight for Poker Rights Daily Action Plan on PocketFives

Some members have shared with me their reluctance to join social networks due to privacy concerns. Fortunately, we can sign up for YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook with pseudonyms if we wish not to divulge personal information.

The poker community has been very effective on social media, so it makes sense for us to utilize this community core competency. These are very beneficial activities for us because they provide objective evidence to lawmakers of support and passion for our position, while simultaneously showing a lack of active opposition. In other words, these efforts really do make a difference.

Membership Deal

As we mentioned last week, PPA has a new membership promotion. For just $15, you can join or extend your current membership through the end of 2012. New and renewing members get a nice shirt or a hat. I hope everyone will consider an upgraded or extended membership. It is important for us all to have some skin in the game, so to speak. I know times are tough for many right now, but if this is within your means, please consider a premium membership today. Thanks!

To sign up or to get more information, please click here.

Interviews
PPA comes before poker media to take on the tough questions as often as possible, as the questions we receive at these interviews are representative of the issues in which the poker community is most interested.

PPA Chairman former Senator Alfonse D’Amato and I appeared on QuadJacks Poker Radio immediately after the House subcommittee hearing. Click here to listen to our recap of the hearing and our discussion on the fight going forward.

I appeared on Short Stacked Radio last Tuesday as well (click here to listen…I come on at time point 1:28:50), where I answered many member questions. I will be back on their program this evening (11/1) at 9:30 pm ET. You can listen live at http://shortstackedradio.com/radio. Recap of Today’s Important Congressional Gaming Hearing & Other Highlights

Recap of Today’s Important Congressional Hearing & other Highlights As you know, the House Subcommittee for Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade held a hearing today examining the potential regulation of Internet gambling.  The hearing entitled, “Internet Gambling: Is There a Safe Bet?” called upon a variety of witnesses to discuss how best Internet gambling can be regulated in the U.S.  Among the witnesses was Poker Player Alliance Chairman and former Senator, Alfonse D’Amato.  A complete list of witnesses and their full testimonies is available here. You can also watch the full 2 ½ hour Committee hearing on CSPAN.com here.

Senator D’Amato did an exceptional job and delivered impassioned remarks defending your right to play.  He urged Congress to adopt rules and regulations to ensure American consumers have a safe marketplace in which to play poker on the Internet.  In fact, when it came to consumer protections the conclusion of every witness before the Committee was that regulation was far better than the status quo.  And, more importantly, that sentiment was also expressed almost unanimously by the lawmakers who attended the hearing.  The question on the lawmakers’ minds was not “if” internet poker should be regulated, but rather “how” should regulation look.

We have come a long, long way from just a few short years ago when Congress could only talk about how best to prohibit Internet gambling and poker.  This shift in attitude has much to do with the advocacy efforts of your PPA and the poker community in general who have done so much to educate lawmakers on this issue.  We have turned opponents into champions for our cause and completely changed the debate in Washington D.C.

As I stood with Senator D’Amato today meeting with members of the Committee — before and after the hearing — I was immensely proud to hear every lawmaker tell us that they are being contacted by poker players in their districts.  While politicians often give us reason to be cynical about government, one thing is clear, they appreciate hearing from the voters on issues that matter most.  Please keep up the pressure and please continue to make your voice heard.  It is truly paying off!

We all have much to be proud of, but there is still much more to do.  I hope you will consider the next step in supporting the PPA by becoming a 2012 member today.  We are offering a special $15.00 deal (normally $20.00) that gives you a PPA membership for the remainder of 2011 and all of 2012!  This should be a “snap call” for any poker player who wants to continue the fight for our poker rights.

Other Highlights
  • The PPA would like to thank Congressman Joe Barton for his continued leadership on this issue.  He was excellent at today’s hearing and he is working to educate every member of Congress about the benefits of regulated Internet poker.  Check out his opening statement from today’s hearing.
  • This week the National District Attorney’s Association, the oldest and largest professional organization representing criminal prosecutors in the world, issued a statement in support of regulated Internet poker.
  • Check out a good opinion piece by former FBI Director Louis Freeh and former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge highlighting the need for Internet poker regulation.
  • The Hill, one of the leading publications for Congress, has a good recap of today’s hearing.
Again, I hope you will please stand with the PPA and share in our continued success by becoming a 2012 PPA member today for just 15.00!

Thank you.

Proud to Play,

John A. Pappas
Executive Director

Upcoming Hearing on Internet Gaming

The PPA has learned that the U.S. House of Representatives’ Subcommittee for Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade will hold a hearing on Internet gaming on Tuesday, October 25, 2011. The subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee will bring forward a variety of witnesses to discuss regulation of Internet gaming and gather information for a future hearing to examine the merits of Rep. Joe Barton’s Online Poker Act of 2011 (H.R. 2366).

At the time of this email the witnesses for the hearing are still unknown. The PPA and its lobbying team will continue to meet with members of the subcommittee and their staffs leading up to next week’s hearing. We will be asking PPA members whose U.S. Representative is a member of this committee to contact their member directly before the hearing. Please check the PPA website and your inbox for future announcements about this very important hearing.

Weekly Update from Rich Muny, VP of Player Relations

I wish to thank the entire poker community for taking the time to stand up for our right to play. We are being heard on Capitol Hill and across the country. As I mentioned last week, we have received excellent feedback from lawmakers and our lobbyists on the effectiveness of the efforts of the poker community, so let’s all keep this effort growing!

We have a nice opportunity to make ourselves heard today, so I encourage everyone to participate. CNN is airing this evening’s GOP presidential debate live from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. ET from the Venetian in Las Vegas. CNN is seeking questions for candidates via the CNN Politics fan page on Facebook, Twitter (using the #CNNDebate hashtag), and their website. So, let’s all submit some pro-poker questions. As this debate is being held in Las Vegas, our issue will be seen as topical.

To participate:
  1. Submit pre-filled pro-poker debate questions via Twitter HERE, HERE, and HERE. Either submit these as-is or, even better, edit them a bit to give them some individuality.
  2. Like the pro-poker Facebook CNN debate questions HERE and HERE, then like and post pro-poker questions/comments there and on the CNN Facebook debate page main wall HERE. Just post something straightforward, like, “To all the candidates: What is your position on the licensing, regulation and taxation of online poker?” (To find all the poker questions, scroll to the bottom of the page and click “more posts” until a day’s worth of posts are visible. Then, hit CTRL-F and search for “poker”. Use “highlight all” to spot the poker posts quickly.)
  3. Submit pro-poker questions directly to CNN HERE. Again, try something like, “To all the candidates: What is your position on the licensing, regulation and taxation of online poker?”
That is all it takes! With this, not only will you let the candidates know you demand your right to play poker in your own home on your own computer…you will also let CNN know that many of its viewers are deeply interested in this issue.

Weekly Update from Rich Muny, VP of Player Relations

The big news this week is PPA’s meeting with the Department of Justice regarding player funds locked up on Full Tilt Poker, Absolute Poker, and Ultimate Bet. Needless to say, this is at the forefront of the concerns of the membership and of the PPA, so I am pleased to report that your PPA has been proactive in pushing for restitution for our members.

From Executive Director John Pappas:
“We still have an open dialogue with [the DOJ] and look forward to more productive conversations down the road. We plan to follow up to make sure the DOJ gets a guarantee that players get restitution through any deal with new Full Tilt management.”

Weekly Update from Rich Muny, VP of Player Relations

The big news this week, of course, is the signing of the acquisition agreement between Groupe Bernard Tapie and Full Tilt Poker. Player repayment is being promised by the parties involved. Here is a quote from a Washington Post article on the matter:
Full Tilt said the agreement includes a plan to repay balances of players worldwide who haven’t had access to their gambling funds since April.
Needless to say, it is my hope that we all get repaid in full as soon as possible. More specifically, it is my hope that the Justice Department will, once obtaining iron-clad guarantees of repayment from any party wishing to purchase Full Tilt Poker, work to fast-track settlement of all outstanding issues. As the DoJ has identified players as the victims in all of this, I expect they will welcome a settlement that addresses player restitution.

I appeared on Short Stacked Radio last Tuesday (click here to listen…I come on at time point 1:29:00) and answered lots of questions. I will be back on their program this evening (9/4) at 9:30 pm ET. You can listen live at http://shortstackedradio.com/radio. If you have a question for me that you would like me to address on the show, please email it to me so I can answer it for you.

PPA Report from Gaming Conferences

For the past few days the PPA has attended and participated in two of the largest annual conferences of the gaming industry.  On Sunday, the PPA helped to arrange a keynote speech delivered by Congressman Joe Barton, author of the Online Poker Act of 2011, at the International Association of Gaming Advisors in Las Vegas.  Influential gaming attorneys, industry executives and key state and tribal regulators crowded the room to hear Congressman Barton deliver a candid view on the prospects of federal legislation.  In short, he expressed optimism that a deal could be struck over the next six months and that several opportunities will present themselves in which to include Internet poker legislation.  First and foremost being the newly created Deficit Super Committee which will need to make recommendations to Congress before Thanksgiving.  Further, Congressman Barton said he believes his bill (H.R. 2366) will be given a hearing in the House Energy and Commerce Committee in the coming weeks.  This is welcomed news and provides us a great forum to explain the merits of appropriate regulation in a public setting.  Please stay tuned for more information on the exact timing of a hearing on Joe Barton’s H.R. 2366.

On Monday, the PPA attended a full day of meetings and panel discussions at the Global Gaming Expo’s iGaming Congress.  The fact that the Global Gaming Expo which is sponsored by the American Gaming Association (a coalition of U.S. brick and mortar gaming interests) has dedicated a full day of its conference to discuss Internet gaming, and primarily Internet poker, represents a huge evolution in support for this online game of skill.  The PPA plays an important role at these meetings to ensure that the viewpoints of the players do not get lost in the discussion of how gaming companies can best monetize their interests in cyberspace.  Gaming operators cannot credibly talk about potential revenues and business opportunities until they fully realize that the consumer will ultimately drive the Internet marketplace.  The PPA will continue to provide the players a voice at these conferences and others.  And, we will continue our advocacy efforts in Washington D.C. and elsewhere so that lawmakers understand the importance of the player in the larger debate about regulation of Internet poker.

“We the People” Poker Petition to President Obama

Directions on how to sign the “We the People Petition”

We the People is a new addition to the White House website that allows Americans to petition the Obama Administration on a range of issues. Per the site, “if a petition gets enough support, White House staff will review it, ensure it is sent to the appropriate policy experts, and issue an official response.”

The site is getting a lot of traffic, so you may get either a “site is under maintenance” or a “404 not found” message. Just try it a few times and you’ll get through. Even with this slight delay, it should take only a few minutes to complete:
  1. Go HERE and click “CREATE AN ACCOUNT.”
  2. The site will send a confirmation email. Click on the link in that email to continue.
  3. Click “? SIGN THIS PETITION” to vote (if you are not redirected automatically, go HERE to vote). (Please note that even if you sign the petition you can voluntarily exclude yourself from receiving emails and information from the White House.)
  4. Send a prefilled, editable Twitter message to invite others to sign this petition HERE.

Deficit Super Committee Outreach

The United States Congress Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction is made up of 12 members of Congress — six representatives and six senators, with equal representation from Democrats and Republicans — who have been tasked with developing a bipartisan plan to reduce the federal deficit. The plan will be delivered to the full Congress and President Obama by Thanksgiving.

Let’s all take a few moments to visit the super committee’s website HERE to send the super committee members our recommendations. Below is a sample letter that you can edit or cut-and-paste as-is into the message field. Or, better yet, write your own. This is another great opportunity for us to demonstrate support for our position.

SAMPLE LETTER

Dear Honorable Joint Select Committee Members,

HR 2366, the Online Poker Act, is a bipartisan bill that, should it become law, will create thousands of jobs while providing up to $40 billion in new tax revenue for the federal deficit over the next ten years — without raising taxes. It also mandates strong consumer protections and effective age verification.

Former FBI Director Louis Freeh and former Secretary of Homeland Security, Governor, and Assistant District Attorney Tom Ridge support federal online poker licensing because it addresses control of cash flows and mandates consumer protections, while WiredSafety concluded that “combining a thoughtful regulatory scheme with education, technology tools, and support appears to be the most effective means of handling the realities and risks” of online poker.

Licensed U.S.-based horse race wagering sites have proven that online betting sites can successfully implement strong consumer protections while creating American jobs and generating revenues for our government. It is time to allow online poker sites the same opportunity.

I respectfully ask that you seriously consider recommending sensible licensing and regulation of online poker within the U.S. in your deficit reduction report to Congress and the President.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Add your name here

House Committee on Energy and Commerce

Let’s ask the House Committee on Energy and Commerce to support legislation for online poker in the U.S. As this is the committee that has jurisdiction over HR 2366, it is important that we ALL ask them for a hearing. It will take you just thirty seconds!
  1. Send a prefilled, editable pro-poker Twitter message HERE.
    • Verify that your Twitter account is not set to “private”.
  2. Try to wait at least an hour (but send prior to that if necessary), then send another Twitter message HERE.
  3. Like the FB page HERE (you can unlike when done with these actions if you wish), then like the pro-poker comment HERE.
  4. Return to the main page HERE to post and like pro-poker comments. [Speed tip: Hit CTRL-F for search, then search for "poker" and "2366". Use "highlight all."]
