PokerPAC FAQ

What is a Political Action Committee?

Political Action Committees (PACs) were first created under the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971. A PAC enables likeminded individuals to voluntarily pool their financial resources in order to contribute to candidates running for federal and state offices.

Why is PokerPAC important to our cause and organization?

PokerPAC provides the next important step in our legislative efforts across the United States.
It is one thing to go to a congressional office and lobby for poker, but this should not be our only means of conveying poker’s important message. A campaign donation from PokerPAC carries with it both the voice and financial pledge of the more than one million members of the Poker Players Alliance; this has a resounding effect on politicians. PokerPAC is a critical component to the poker community’s success in Washington.

Why shouldn’t I just support individual candidates and bypass PokerPAC?

Getting involved in the political process is a good thing. However, an individual donation, whatever size, tends to get lost in the shuffle of a big campaign. Will that candidate know what your personal issues are and equate them to your donation? Most likely, no. However when a candidate receives a donation from PokerPAC, he knows that behind that check is a million member strong organization, whose issues are well known. There is strength in numbers and strength in contributing through PokerPAC.

Why should I join PokerPAC? Can’t the PPA promote its own interests?

The PPA does promote the interests of the poker community, through grassroots advocacy, voter registration drives, charity giving and direct lobbying in Washington DC and state capitals across the country. However, under federal law, the PPA is not allowed to make political contributions. The most effective way to reach our shared goals is by combining the PPA existing efforts with a strong PAC.

How will PokerPAC funds be used?

100% of the PokerPAC funds that are raised are used to support Pro-Poker Candidates at the Federal level as decided by the Board of Directors of PokerPAC.

Who makes up the Board of Directors of PokerPAC?

PokerPAC Co-Chairman is former Senator Alfonse D’Amato. Senator D’Amato also serves as the Chairman of the PPA. PokerPAC’s other  Co-Chairman will be former U.S. Representative Toby Moffett. John Pappas will serve as the PokerPAC Treasurer.

Who can Join PokerPAC?

Membership in PokerPAC is open to PPA employees, Board Members, dues paying members of the PPA, and their families.

Is my membership to PokerPAC Tax deductible, since it is a donation?

No. Like all political donations, PAC donations are not tax deductible.
